Call an envite on the rival team and win the stones you need to reach a chico.
Envite Canario is played in teams, 4 to 12 people in two equal sides. It is the only house game that needs coordination with a partner, and the one that gains most from a full table.
Each team has a captain - the first person to join that team - who calls the bids and answers the other side’s. The rest of the team simply plays their cards.
Before starting, the host picks between the General and Gran Canaria variants, and whether played cards stay visible on the table or are collected after each trick. The more players per team, the more matadores come into play above the malilla.
The host picks the variant. General is 12 piedras to a chico with bids escalating through 4, 7 and 9; Gran Canaria is 8 piedras to a chico with bids of 3, 5 and 7, so each round weighs more and the game moves faster.
On a public table no host decides this: everyone votes for the option they want and the tally shows on each button.
The game is won at three chicos, so a full game is one of the long ones here. Plan for a session rather than a quick hand between two other things.
The matadores are always the same physical cards, whichever suit ends up turned. The more of you there are per team, the more matadores come into play above the malilla.
If you call a bid and the other team folds, your side takes the fold’s piedras without a single card being shown: 3 in the General variant and 2 in Gran Canaria. Folding cheaply is a legitimate decision, and knowing when to do it is half the game.
